Bill and Chase Elliott already share a profession. The Hall of Fame father is happy his son will take on his old No. 9 for next year in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

It was announced earlier this week that Chase Elliott would ride in the No. 9 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports in 2018. It was the same number his father, Bill, used for most of his Hall of Fame career.

Bill Elliott won 38 races and the 1988 NASCAR title in that car.

Bill Elliott said Sunday that it took only about a week between when the idea was hatched and it was decided Chase would give up the No. 24 he's run with the past two seasons.

Chase and Bill discussed the switch and told him, "whatever makes you happy."

Chase Elliott said owner Rick Hendrick had the idea in the back of mind. "I had always kind of lightheartedly joked about it over time and somewhere along the line he has been really listening to that," Chase Elliott said. "I appreciated it for sure."

Bill said he did not care what number his son ran with as long as he was happy.

"You're in a great place with a great car owner, got a great future as far as im concerned," Bill Elliott told him. "And that's all I could ever ask for."
