Ryan Newman’s tough luck continued on Sunday.

One week after being eliminated from playoff contention for the Cup Series championship, Newman crashed in a wreck involving Clint Bowyer on lap 44 and is out of the race. Bowyer bounced off the outside wall and his car hit Newman’s bumper, spinning him out and causing his car to catch fire. Newman was not injured.

Bowyer is still racing.

"I’m not sure how it started," Newman said. "I know I got tight underneath Clint (Bowyer) and I’m not sure if he hit me and turned me on purpose or just hit me and ran out of room.  I’m not sure if I stuck him in the fence before that, but we just kind of ran out of race track.  It wasn’t intentional on my part.  I’m not sure if it was on his."

Newman went on to say “it was either my mistake or his mistake but we were going for the same piece of real estate.”

Last week at Dover, Newman was fighting to stay on the lead lap to prevent being eliminated from playoff contention. In the process he held up race leader Chase Elliott from passing him. That allowed Kyle Busch to make up ground and catch Elliott and win the race.

Newman apparently wasn’t happy with the track conditions at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday referring to the stick substance applied to the track.

“They are fabricated. What do you expect?” Newman said.
