DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Daniel Suarez will be the new NASCAR face of Subway following the sudden retirement of Carl Edwards.

Subway sponsored Edwards for eight years, but the driver retired in January and his Joe Gibbs Racing ride went to Suarez. The reigning Xfinity Series champion is the first Mexican champion of a NASCAR national series and the only foreign-born driver in the Cup Series.

Subway said Thursday it will sponsor four races this year for Suarez, and use him in upcoming TV commercials. The company also noted that Suarez's favorite sandwich is a footlong club (turkey, roast beef, Black Forest ham) on flatbread, toasted, topped with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, pickles, olives, lite mayo, oil & vinegar, and salt & pepper.

"I enjoy eating healthy, and Subway has always been my go to choice to refuel my body when I'm on the road or at home," Suarez said.

Chris Carroll, chief advertising officer for Subway Restaurants, said the brand is excited for its future with Suarez, and also thanked Edwards "for many years of success, and in particular for his caring and always enthusiastic support for the brand and causes we championed.”
