CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — An online community says it has raised $50,000 to sponsor NASCAR driver Josh Wise in the May 4 race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Reddit Racing held a virtual currency fundraiser online to sponsor Wise, and says it collected more than 67 million DogeCoin. The crypto currency is typically used to buy goods and services, as well as for "tipping" fellow Internet users.

In conversion rates, 1,000 DogeCoin is worth about 66 cents.

An online fundraiser in January raised DogeCoin to contribute to the Jamaican bobsled team, which needed money to make the trip to the Olympics.

Wise thanked DogeCoin and the Reddit community on Twitter, posting: "Just a week ago this was only an idea and now it's a reality."
